About Us

We are a child health practice servicing children from birth through college. We like to think of ourselves as easy to approach, and we value your input in making many health decisions for your child. Thank you for taking the time to read this information. We hope you’ll share this information with any friends, relatives, or sitters who are responsible for your child in your absence.

APPOINTMENTS

We are available for scheduled appointments in our Cranston, RI, office.
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Wednesdays - Shared On-Call and Selected Non-Summer Morning Hours
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Weekends, Holidays, and Other Times - Shared On-Call

We try to see all patients on an appointment basis. We make every effort to honor all time commitments, but please realize that medical emergencies do occasionally occur. Late afternoon appointment times are more often affected by the unpredictable nature of pediatrics.

We accept new patient appointment requests from the patient’s parent or legal guardian only and not from any other relative, babysitter, or agency.

Note: We strongly advocate for full immunization of all children as recommended by the CDC and as required by Rhode Island state laws. Should you not desire to have your child fully vaccinated, we require that you seek care elsewhere.

Please know that simply making an appointment with us does not establish a doctor-patient relationship until we have examined your child in our office or at the hospital.

EMERGENCY CARE

When your child has medical needs outside of office hours that you think are urgent and can’t wait until the next day, call (401) 943-7337, our live answering service will call the doctor on call, who will return your call as soon as possible. If, for some reason, the answering service does not pick up after 3 minutes, call the answering service back line at (401) 868-4185.

We have pediatric coverage arrangements with D’Alessandro, DeAngelis, Eden, Lefebvre, Nevola, Ohnmacht, and Vieau. We take turns covering for pediatric patients on weekends, holidays, vacations, and summer Wednesdays. Be assured that, in our absence, your child will be able to be seen by a qualified pediatric provider if needed.

When on the phone with a doctor, describe all your child’s symptoms clearly. Please have a pen and paper available and your pharmacy’s phone number at hand. We recommend that you do not go to emergency rooms or urgent care clinics for minor illnesses without first calling us. The decision to have your child seen at an emergency room, an urgent care center, or at our office the next day will depend on the nature of your child’s illness, so please call us first. If your child has a serious accident, go directly to the emergency room and have the doctor there call us. Children less than 1 year old are better served at Hasbro Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. Of course, if you need immediate help for a serious emergency, call 911.

Please be aware that if your phone has anonymous caller block features, it may be impossible for a physician to call you from their home or cell phone. You must dial *86 to deactivate this feature so that you can receive the callback. Please do not save or *69 the numbers from which we call you, as they may be the phones of our friends or relatives that have no knowledge of how to reach us. The ONLY number for you to call us at should be (401) 943-7337.

For poison emergencies, call the Poison Control Center at 1 (800) 222-1222. This number is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Poison Control Center will give you detailed information regarding your response to your child’s poison accident.

For mental health crisis services, please call 988.

Please anticipate the need for prescription refills when we’re in the office. In most cases, the best way to request a prescription refill is to simply call your pharmacy directly.

Like many other pediatric groups in Rhode Island, we no longer will be performing in-person hospital care. We are on the courtesy staff of both Women & Infants Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. We can still access your child’s hospital health record and would be glad to discuss your child’s care during the hospitalization should you have significant concerns for us. We will also be receiving full details of your child’s care directly from the hospital upon discharge.

Full-term healthy infants will be attended to by the excellent staff of hospitalist pediatricians and nurse practitioners of Women & Infants Hospital or Kent Hospital. Premature or ill babies are attended to by neonatal specialists at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. If your child is admitted as an inpatient to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric hospitalist service or appropriate pediatric specialist service will assume care of your child during this time.

Nearer the time of your delivery, simply let your obstetrician or midwife know that you will be taking your baby to Atlantic Pediatrics RI (Drs. Concannon & Vitale) after discharge. The hospital will contact us once the baby is released. We would like to examine your baby within a few days of discharge, so call us at (401) 943-7337.

EMAIL (Not)

Sorry, but it is both impossible and inappropriate for us to answer medical questions sent by email or through our portal. Quite simply, the level of concern in a parent’s voice cannot be expressed in an email. We, therefore, do not feel that email is safe, secure, or effective for pediatrician-parent communication.
Please call us instead at (401) 943-7337.

TELEMEDICINE AND VIDEOCONFERENCING

The providers at Atlantic Pediatrics RI are leaders in virtual and telemedicine visits. These types of visits are most appropriate when geared toward problems that do not require a hands-on physical exam. These telemedicine visits and videoconferences will be billed through your health insurance, so fees and co-pays that you would normally have with ‘in-office’ visits will apply. If, after having a virtual visit, it is determined that your child should instead come in for an ‘in-office’ visit, you will not be charged a second co-pay. Your use of this service means that you accept these terms as above.

PATIENT-CENTERED MEDICAL HOME

PCMH Logo

The mission of Atlantic Pediatrics RI is to provide exceptional health care for infants, children, and teens through college age. We provide both preventative health maintenance and management of routine to complex health problems by using a Patient-Centered Medical Home practice model. Our vision is to help our patients receive the best in health care, to prevent the development of health problems, to help them achieve their personal highest level of health, and to teach patients and their parents to help manage any medical problems. To this end, our staff members treat each individual with respect, maintain confidentiality, and practice state-of-the-art medical care.

Our practice model incorporates associate staff to help us meet quality goals and manage patients with more complex health issues. We also provide patients or family access to evidence-based care and self-management. We are supported in these efforts by the Rhode Island Primary Care Physicians Corporation and by Integra Community Care Network.

PAYMENT AND INSURANCE... WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

We currently participate in the following major health insurance plans:
  • All Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans (Nationwide)
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Tufts Health Plan/Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
  • Cigna
  • Aetna
  • TRICARE
  • HealthCare Value Management, Inc.
  • MultiPlan

For members with RIteCare (Rhode Island’s Medicaid), we participate in UnitedHealthcare and Tufts Health Plan. We DO NOT accept the Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island. Please choose UnitedHealthcare or Tufts Health RITogether plans instead!

Some restrictions may apply, and some newer or smaller health plans are added occasionally, so please call our office manager for better information. Please bring your current health insurance card and any required co-payment with you at the time of each visit. All applicable co-payments are collected upon check-in for the appointment. For managed care plans, we require that our names (or those of doctors in our on-call group) MUST be listed on your child’s insurance card.

We do not discriminate based on race, color, sex, age, or disability, but we are a pediatric practice that restricts itself to the medical care of infants, children, teens, and younger adults through college age.
